Community Terms of Use
In short
- Share real, current sightings. Report places and events, never people's identities.
- No harassment, no doxxing, no false reports, and never get in the way of rangers or police.
- For theft or suspicious activity: describe what happened, not what someone looks like. Never confront anyone. Call 000 in an emergency.
- Reports and predictions can be wrong. Always check the signs; you're responsible for where you park.
- Rangr isn't run by any council, government, police or parking authority.
- We can remove content and suspend accounts that break these rules.
These terms apply when you use Rangr, a map-based community alert app currently piloting in Newcastle, NSW. Rangr is operated by [OPERATOR LEGAL NAME] (ABN [ABN]) (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Rangr, you agree to these terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information.
1. What Rangr is (and isn’t)
- Rangr lets neighbours share short-lived, map-based reports — such as ranger sightings, incidents, hazards, and lost or found pets and items — and comment and vote on them.
- Rangr is a community information tool. It is not an emergency service, and it is not affiliated with police, council or any government agency unless we say so.
- Ranger sightings and other reports are observations by community members. They are not official information.
- Push notifications depend on your browser’s permission, your device and third-party push services. They may be delayed or not arrive at all. Don’t rely on Rangr for anything safety-critical.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
- Give accurate details when you sign up, and keep them up to date in My account.
- Your username and display name are public. Don’t choose one that impersonates someone else or is offensive.
- Keep your password secret. You are responsible for activity on your account.
- You can delete your account at any time in My account. Your past reports and comments will remain but will be shown as from “former_neighbour”.
3. Community rules
When you post reports, comments, votes or flags, you must not:
- Harass, threaten, intimidate or abuse anyone, including rangers, officers and other users.
- Dox anyone — that is, post or hint at someone’s identity, home, vehicle registration, workplace or other identifying details.
- Post personal information about yourself or anyone else, including names, phone numbers, addresses or photos of people.
- Post false or misleading reports, or deliberately vote or flag dishonestly.
- Obstruct, hinder or interfere with officers or rangers doing their job, or use Rangr to plan or encourage that.
- Use Rangr to break the law, or to encourage anyone else to.
- Post content that is hateful, discriminatory, sexually explicit, defamatory or that infringes someone else’s rights.
- Spam, advertise, or use bots, scrapers or automated tools to access or post to Rangr.
- Try to get around bot checks, rate limits, suspensions or other security measures.
Only report a location you are comfortable making public, and place reports where the thing actually is — not at someone’s home.
Theft and suspicious activity reports
- Describe what happened or what someone is doing, not what they look like. Don't mention race, ethnicity, age or clothing as a reason for suspicion.
- Don't accuse a named or identifiable person, and don't post photos, plates or guesses about who did it.
- Never confront, follow or detain anyone. If someone is in danger or a crime is happening now, call 000. Otherwise report it to police on 131 444.
- Rangr is not a police service. Reports are not sent to police, and we may remove reports that look like profiling.
4. Reports may be wrong — use your judgement
Reports expire automatically and are hidden from the map after a set time (20 minutes for rangers, 60 minutes for incidents, 3 hours for hazards, 24 hours for pets and found items). Something may still be there after a report expires, or may be gone long before.
5. Your content
- You keep ownership of what you post. You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display, and use your content to operate Rangr.
- You are responsible for what you post and confirm you have the right to post it.
- Reports, comments, your username and display name, and vote and flag counts are visible to other users.
6. Moderation and enforcement
- You can flag reports you think are abusive or false.
- We may remove or hide any content, and warn, suspend or delete any account, if we reasonably believe it breaches these terms, puts someone at risk, or is unlawful. We may do this without notice.
- We don’t have to monitor content, and we can’t review everything posted.
- We may share information with police or other authorities where required or permitted by law.
7. Availability and changes
- Rangr is a pilot. Features may change, be paused or end. We don’t promise Rangr will always be available or error-free.
- We may update these terms. We will post the new version here with a new version date and, for significant changes, ask you to agree again or let you know in the app or by email.
8. Australian Consumer Law and liability
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded.
Subject to that, and to the extent permitted by law:
- Rangr is provided “as is”, and we don’t guarantee that any report or comment is accurate, complete or current;
- we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from content posted by other users or from your reliance on it; and
- where our liability for a failure to comply with a consumer guarantee can be limited, it is limited to supplying the service again or paying the cost of having it supplied again.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales.
